Favorite Fabric Shops

Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics

I’m lucky enough to have Stonemountain and Daughter as my local fabric shop. They’ve been in Berkeley for almost forty years, and it feels like the center of the indie sewing world. They always have the most popular fabrics and newest indie patterns, plus an incredible collection of high quality woven fabrics from around the world. And in case the fabric isn’t enough, the staff is filled with talented and knowledgeable sewists who are always ready to pass along their knowledge.

Britex Fabrics

Britex Fabrics is my go-to for special occasion fabrics. Their buyers source the most beautiful fabrics from French and Italian mills, including incredible silks, laces and bouclés. They have loads more in store than they do on their website. Definitely worth a trip if you’re in San Francisco.

B & J Fabrics

New York is filled with disorganized fabric stores, which can feel like they’re bursting at the seams with fabric, but not B & J. Tucked away on the second floor of an office building, B & J has exceptional quality fabric neatly organized. Since they do a lot of work for fashion houses and theatre productions, their fabric is top notch and usually reorderable.

Liberty of London

I love everything from Liberty! Long before I ever considered sewing, I would snach up every piece from their J. Crew collaborations, and when I lived in London, I would go to their hulking Regent Street flagship to browse their silk scarves. There are loads of shops that carry their fabric in the United States, but I still prefer to order from their website. Their shop features fabrics that never make their way to other retailers and their overseas shipping is fairly reasonable.

Stylemaker Fabrics

If I were to open a fabric shop, it would look a whole lot like Stylemaker Fabrics – we have nearly identical taste! If I could order 3 yards of everything in their shop, I would! Their fabric always manages to be classic and on-trend.

Fabric Godmother and Lamazi Fabric

These two beautifully curated shops complement one another perfectly. I check their sites every day to see what new treasures they’ve stocked. They’re usually the first to have the latest Atelier Brunette and Lady McElroy fabrics. They also have great shipping to the United States.

Miss Matatabi Japanese Fabrics

Miss Matatabi is far and away the largest stockist of Japanese fabrics shipping to the United States. They stock the full lines of well known brands, like nani iro and Cotton + Steel, and have hundreds of other beautiful, uniquely Japanese fabrics.  Shipping is a $15 flat rate and arrives pretty quickly.

Minerva Crafts and Fabric.com

Between these two fabric and crafting behemoths you can find absolutely anything and everything you need for a sewing project. I buy A LOT of fabric from them both. Minerva has loads of fabrics not available anywhere else, and I think they stock the full run of Lady McElroy fabrics. Fabric.com is the largest stockist of Télio fabrics and carries all of Gertie’s fabric lines – they’re my go-to for fun, seasonal cotton sateen (my favorite fabric to sew with!).Open publish panel
